Kubb (pronounced koob) is a Swedish lawn game in which two teams knock down each other’s game pieces with large dowels; it’s fairly simple and a ton of fun. There are three main types of game pieces: 10 small blocks (Kubbs), 1 large block (King) and 6 wooden dowels (batons). The game can be fairly heavy and lugging it to and from the beach or park can be a pain.

I decided to modify the game pieces to make the set easier to carry and pack. I shortened the traditional batons slightly and cut holes in each Kubb piece so the batons can be stored within them. I also modified the king piece to split in half and hold a baton as well. By doing this all the batons can be stored within the pieces creating a more manageable set and reducing weight by over 10%.

Methods + Machines Used:
band saw – to cut the Kubb, King and batons to approximate size
NC mill – to square the faces and bore the storage holes on the King and Kubb
belt sander – to smooth all the cut faces
block plane – to chamfer all the sides
laser cutter – to etch the fish scale pattern on the King
